Note-Mounting hardware, included in classes of this group, includes such specially designed items as brackets, holders, retainers, etc. Excluded from classes in this group are such hardware items as screws (Class 5305), bolts (Class 5306), studs (Class 5307), washers (Class 5310), rivets (Class 5320), and other common items indexed to specific classes, other than in Group 59. PROTECTOR,ELECTRICAL CABLE

An item designed to be interposed between a cable and its support or housing to prevent chafing caused by contraction and expansion due to changes in the ambient temperature or damage or injury from outside sources. Excludes such items as loom, cotton sleeving, rubber blankets, grade clamps and all types of conduit and INSULATION SLEEVING, ELECTRICAL.

ROD,GROUND

An item designed to be driven into the earth for the purpose of establishing electrical contact. One end is pointed or tapered to facilitate entrance into the earth. See also ROD SECTION, GROUND.

JUNCTION BOX ASSEMBLY

Two or more junction boxes on a common mounting or mounted on each other. Do not use for single junction boxes which are complex or unusual in construction, or for a junction box with an extension. See also TERMINAL BOX.

CONDUIT ASSEMBLY,METAL,FLEXIBLE

A specific length of CONDUIT, METAL, FLEXIBLE with permanently attached ferrule(s), coupling nut(s), elbow(s), or the like. Excludes detachable fittings such as tee(s), wye(s), or elbow(s). Also, excludes conduit like items that are designed for other than electrical applications. See also CASING (as modified).

FANNING STRIP

An item made of rigid or semirigid insulating material for spacing or separating wire(s) and/or cable(s). For items having terminals, see TERMINAL BOARD; and INSULATOR (as modified).

POTHEAD

A form of terminator, usually used in power and telephone distribution, designed to be hermetically sealed to the cable(s) to exclude moisture. It may have terminals accessible for testing, or a junction block to facilitate the connecting of cable(s) and wire. See also SEALING FITTING, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT.

COVER,INTERCONNECTING BOX

COVER,SWITCH TERMINAL

An item generally made of insulating material and used to protect switch terminals against damage, shorting and grounding. Excludes COVER, ELECTRICAL SWITCH; BASE, SWITCH and HOUSING, SENSITIVE SWITCH.

CHAMBER,CABLE TERMINAL

An item specifically designed to admit, protect and seal conductor groups or cables and also affords a method of conveniently distributing, terminating and interconnecting the leads.

STUFFING TUBE

An item specifically designed to pass an electrical cable or tube through a continuous structure with provisions for packing so as to prevent the leakage of liquids and/or gases through the opening. May include packing nut(s), adapter(s), washer(s), gasket(s), bushing(s), packing(s), cap(s), and/or plug(s).

FASTENER,CORD ASSEMBLY

A fastener primarily designed to hold and secure a cord assembly so that pulling of the cord will not put a strain on the terminal connections.

PLATE,ELECTRICAL GROUNDING

A rigid or semirigid item of electrically conductive material whose thickness is small in comparsion to its length and width. It is designed to be used for electrical grounding, particularly in junction box and power outlet applications. Excludes TERMINAL STRIP, GROUNDING; CONTACT STRIP, RADIO FREQUENCY GROUNDING; and STRIP, ELECTRICAL GROUNDING.

COLLAR,CABLE

An item designed to be affixed around an electrical cable to limit the axial movement of the cable at the point where it passes through an opening. It has no facilities for retaining the cable to another object. Excludes BUSHING, STRAIN RELEIF, CABLE.

An item specifically designed to provide reinforcement for a crossarm when mounted on a pole.

HANGER,CABLE

A metallic or nonmetallic item of various shapes, designed to position, suspend, support and/or secure electrical cable(s) to utility poles, bulkheads, messenger wires or other supporting surfaces. It may be fastened to the structure by means of rod(s), bolts(s), screw(s) and the like. Excludes CLAMP (as modified); HANGER, WIRE STRAND; BRACKET PIPE; and SUPPORT, ELECTRICAL CABLE.

PIN,INSULATOR

An item designed to be inserted into a crossarm for the specific purpose of mounting pin type electrical insulators. Excludes BRACKET, INSULATOR.

PLUG,STUFFING TUBE

An item designed to be fitted into the body of a STUFFING TUBE in order to prevent the leakage of liquids and/or gases through the opening in the absence of the cable normally passing through the tube.

SUPPORT,ELECTRICAL CABLE

A collapsible framework specifically designed to be placed on the ground to hold electrical cable above the ground surface. Excludes BRACKET, PIPE.

BUSHING,ELECTRICAL CONDUCTOR

An item of metal and/or insulating material having a smooth interior with rounded edges to prevent damage to the insulation of the wire or cable emerging there-from, designed to fit through panel(s) or the wall of a JUNCTION BOX. It may be designed to snap into a knockout hole, or designed with an external thread and furnished with or without a locking nut. BRACKET,INSULATOR

An item designed to be attached to a supporting surface for the specific purpose of positioning and sustaining an electrical insulator(s). Includes brackets specifically designed for transposing electrical lines.

LINK,REINFORCING,CABLE

An item fabricated from metal rod bent longitudinally into an oval shape, one end of which is intended to fit a messenger cable or guy wire and the opposite end formed with a mounting hole for a lag screw. This item is designed to relieve the strain where a messenger cable or wire is installed at an angle to a suspension clamp.

ADAPTER,STUFFING TUBE

A threaded or unthreaded item designed to mate with the mounting threads or mounting surfaces of a STUFFING TUBE, and to mount the STUFFING TUBE to a continuous structure (bulkhead or deck). The adapter may be recessed on the face to accommodate a gasket and/or washer.

JUNCTION BOX

An enclosure of other than cast metal designed to house, mount, and protect, but does not include wiring connections or electrical device(s) such as terminals and/or terminal boards, switches, jacks, fuseholders, connectors, circuit breakers and the like. It is designed for and may include a cover and such accessories as mounting hardware, brackets, locks, clamps, mounts and conduit fittings. Excludes CONDUIT OUTLET; and CHAMBER, CABLE TERMINAL. CABLE NIPPLE,ELECTRICAL

A preformed item having high electrical resistance designed for installation on end of cable or lead in order to cover the terminal or termination. It may partially cover the terminal of the item to which the cable or lead is attached. May also provide mechanical protection. Excludes INSULATION SLEEVING, ELECTRICAL.

CABINET,ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

An enclosure generally fabricated of sheet material designed to accommodate (but does not include) electrical/electronic equipment so that the equipment may be operated without removal. It may include wires, cables, terminal boards, connectors, etc., required for equipment operation. For items designed to accommodate equipment mounted on panels, see RACK, ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT. See also CASE (2) (as modified). Excludes INTERCONNECTING BOX; INTERCONNECTING CABINET; JUNCTION BOX; and TERMINAL BOX.

RACK,ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

An open or inclosed frame structure designed to accommodate (but does not include) electrical/electronic equipment mounted on standard width panels so that the equipment may be operated after installation without being removed. It must have panel mounting rails that provide a uniform pattern of mounting holes that will accommodate various combinations of standard width panels. It may include wires, cables, terminal boards, connectors, and the like, required for equipment operation. ENTRANCE CAP,ELECTRICAL

An item primarily designed to provide for the entrance of electrical wires into a building, structure, or inclosure and to facilitate their connection to feeders or service conductors. It consists of an insulating block and a metallic housing designed to hold the insulating block and to fit an electrical conduit, conduit fitting, or cable of a specified size. This item is primarily intended for use in exposed, wet, or damp locations and is installed so as to preclude the entrance of rain or debris into the conduit. See also CAP, ELECTRICAL.

ADAPTER,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

An item designed to couple or join two different types or sizes of conduits, and/or to be inserted in the opening of a conduit outlet or box to accommodate a conduit of a larger or smaller size; or it may be designed with internal thread on one end for mating with an electrical connector and an external thread on the other end for mating with a conduit coupling nut; or to establish necessary mechanical accommodations between an electrical conduit, conduit assembly and an electrical connector. Excludes REDUCING WASHER, KNOCKOUT and BOX CONNECTOR, ELECTRICAL. See also ADAPTER, CABLE TO CONNECTOR; and CHASE NIPPLE, CONDUIT.

SEALING FITTING,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

An item of metallic composition with a chamber for sealing compound and two hubs to accommodate electrical conduits of specified sizes. This item is designed with a filler hole and a removable screw plug to enable the pouring of sealing compound into the chamber for the purpose of preventing the passage of explosive gases through a conduit run. The item is primarily designed for use in hazardous locations and may be designed for vertical use, horizontal use, or both. REDUCING WASHER,KNOCKOUT

An item consisting of a flat, cupped or embossed metallic disk with a centerhole to fit an electrical conduit of a specified size and which is specifically designed to reduce the knockout opening in a box, panel, or wireway for the convenience of terminating electrical conduit of smaller size than the knockout. Excludes ADAPTER, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT.

A nipple made of electrical conduit.

ENTRANCE ELBOW,ELECTRICAL

An item of metallic composition cast in the form of an elbow, which is primarily intended to provide for the angular entrance of wires into a building, structure, or enclosure. This item, specifically designed for installation in exposed locations, has two hubs of a specified size to fit the service entrance conduit and may have a third hub for a driven ground connection. It has a cover which makes it tamper-proof and weather-resistant. It may include facilities for pulling electrical conductors but does not have facilities for mounting wiring devices.

BUSHING,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

An item of metal and/or insulating material having internal threads designed to fit over the end of electrical conduit and/or fittings to provide a smooth interior with a rounded edge to prevent damage to the insulation of the wire or cable emerging therefrom. It may be designed to fit over the end of thin wall conduit, and to be fitted with holding (staking) screws, or it may be provided with internal straight threads for attaching to thick wall electrical conduit or fittings. It may be fitted with a temporary knockout cap (bushcap), and grounding or bonding facilities. For externally threaded items, see BOX CONNECTOR, ELECTRICAL; BUSHING, ELECTRICAL CONDUCTOR; CHASE NIPPLE, CONDUIT and BUSHING, STRAIN RELIEF, CABLE. See also FERRULE, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT. BONDNUT,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

An item of metallic composition, with internal threads, designed to fit the external threads of an electrical conduit or fitting, and which, when installed, provides a method of tightening and locking the connection and completes a positive bond between the conduit and apparatus or fitting to which connected. The bonding or grounding action is accomplished by sharp beveled teeth or by a screw(s). See also LOCKNUT, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT and NUT, COUPLING, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT.

UNION,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

An item comprising three members, so constructed that one of the members holds the remaining two in a fixed butted position; generally used to connect two conduits, conduit fittings, or a conduit and a conduit fitting in such a manner that they may be disconnected without disturbing the rest of the conduit line. See also COUPLING, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT.

ELBOW,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

An item fabricated in the form of an elbow and having both ends threaded female, or with unthreaded connecting facilities on both ends, or connecting facilities on both ends, one of which is a male thread without boss or shoulder. If a locknut or bondnut is included, it shall not be considered as a thread boss or shoulder. It is primarily intended to connect conduit to conduit. It may have a removable cover to facilitate pulling wires, but does not include facilities for mounting wiring devices. For items having a removable cover to facilitate pulling wires and specifically designed for close installation in exposed outdoor locations and which may have facilities for an outside driven ground, see ENTRANCE ELBOW, ELECTRICAL. For items with one end having a male thread with a boss or shoulder, see BOX CONNECTOR, ELECTRICAL. For items having a removable screw cap for pulling wires, with the cap positioned 45 degrees from the connection facilities, see ENTRANCE ELBOW, ELECTRICAL. CONDUIT OUTLET

An item designed to be used in a conduit system for the purpose of providing outlets or attachments for electrical wiring devices and/or designed to provide access and facilitate installment of wires. It may or may not include a cover(s). It does not include wiring devices. Excludes ENTRANCE ELBOW, ELECTRICAL. See also JUNCTION BOX.

BEND,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

An item fabricated in the form of a curved section specifically designed to mechanically join a conduit or conduit fitting to another conduit or conduit fitting. Items of this type do not have a boss or hub at either end, nor do they have facilities for mounting wiring devices or pulling electrical conductors. See also ELBOW, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT and CONDUIT OUTLET.

PLATE,WALL,ELECTRICAL

An item designed to mount directly on a bracket or an electrical current carrying wiring device(s) such as switch(es) or outlet(s) (receptacle). The bracket(s) or electrical current carrying device is mounted in a JUNCTION BOX. For trade designated items designed to be attached directly on or through a bracket or electrical wiring device to a CONDUIT OUTLET, see COVER, CONDUIT OUTLET. For items designed for mounting directly on a JUNCTION BOX, see COVER, JUNCTION BOX.

INTERCONNECTING BOX

An inclosure which includes mounts and protects such items as switches, circuit breakers, jacks, fuseholders, connectors, terminals and/or terminal boards, resistors, capacitors, transformers, and the like. It is primarily designed to interconnect two or more electrical and/or electronic items, except primary power source(s) such as generator(s) and battery(ies). It may include a cover or door. For inclosures which connect one or more primary power source(s) to one or more electrical and/or electronic item(s), see DISTRIBUTION BOX. See also CIRCUIT BREAKER BOX; TERMINAL BOX and INTERCONNECTING CABINET.

ROSETTE,ELECTRICAL

An item designed for the connection and support of an electrical drop cord.

STEP,POLE

An item designed to be used as a foot rest in ascending and descending utility poles, when attached thereto.

RACK,CABLE,UNDERGROUND

An item designed for the purpose of supporting cable(s). It is shaped like a channel and has a U like cross section with through holes, slots and the like, along the length. When mounted in the vertical position it will accept hooks which extend out perpindicularly from the surface to support cable(s). The item does not include hooks. See also RACK, CABLE, INTERIOR.

RACK,CABLE,INTERIOR

An open frame structure primarily designed to support electrical cables in buildings and shelters. Its purpose is to provide, by itself or by joining to similar structures, a path or runway for cable which may connect two or more pieces of electrical equipment. It does not include items designed to hold a single cable. See also RACK, CABLE, UNDERGROUND; and HANGER, CABLE.

FERRULE,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

An item usually of one piece construction, but which may be comprised of more than one piece, designed to be affixed permanently or temporarily to the end of an electrical conduit to form an end fitting. Unflanged items form a permanent end fitting which affords mechanical protection to emerging conductors. Flanged items are used with another fitting normally a conduit coupling nut, to make the conduit adaptable for connection to an electrical connector, junction box or other conduit accessory or fitting. Excludes RING, ELECTRICAL BONDING; BUSHING, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT; and BUSHING, PLAIN SLEEVE. See also FERRULE-NUT COUPLING, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT.

HOOK,UNDERGROUND CABLE RACK

A rigid item designed to be perpendicularly attached to an underground cable rack to be used as the supporting arm for cables. May include insulators.

HOLDER,POLE STEP

A holder designed to accommodate a detachable pole step.

DISK,END SEAL,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

A flat circular item fitted on the end of an electrical conduit in order to close the end to prevent the entrance of water or refuse, prior to installation of the wires, during shipment and/or construction. The item may be held in place by means of a conduit bushing and may be easily removed to permit installation of the wires.

SPACER,CABLE

An item constructed specifically to provide a separation between lashed lead covered cable and messenger strand for the prevention of injury to sheath of cable.

PLATFORM,POLE

An item specifically designed to be attached to a utility pole for the purpose of accommodating a workman in a standing or sitting position while engaged in the maintenance or installation of equipment.

BOX CONNECTOR,ELECTRICAL

An item designed to mechanically connect in a straight line or an angle electrical conduit, conduit assemblies, wire, wireway, cable, or cable assemblies to a point of termination, such as a junction box, conduit outlet, or the like. The termination end must have an external thread with a boss or shoulder and may be furnished with a locknut or bondnut; or, must have internal thread with which is furnished an externally threaded hub with a wrenching feature; or be of a snap-in type that may be installed from either inside or outside the box and secured with a captive screw. It is not intended to join conduit to conduit. For angle type items having a male thread without a boss or shoulder, see ELBOW, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT. Does not include facilities to mount wiring devices. Excludes CHASE NIPPLE, CONDUIT.

COUPLING,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

An item specifically designed and constructed to mechanically connect in a straight line two sections of electrical conduit or like fabrication and of the same size. For three-piece items which may be disassembled without disturbing the rest of the conduit line, see UNION, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT. WYE,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

A type of electrical conduit fitting fabricated in the form of the letter Y, having three hubs permitting conduits and/or conduit fittings to be taken off laterally from the main line of equal degree on each side, or with the main line continuing straight with a branch taking off at an angle. For items of this type having facilities for mounting wiring devices, see CONDUIT OUTLET.

EXTENSION,CABLE RACK

A metallic irregularly shaped item designed to permit cable racks to be mounted away from the mounting surface to escape obstructions or limited space.

RING,ELECTRICAL BONDING

An item of metallic composition, usually round and flat with a center hole or slotted hole designed to accommodate an electrical cable or conduit, and which, when used in conjunction with a cable clamp or similar locking device, completes a positive bond between the cable or conduit fitting, such as connectors, adapters, and couplings, and the cable or conduit shield and/or individual conductor shield(s). See also FERRULE, ELECTRICAL CONDUCTOR.

BASE,ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT RACK

A structural item which is specifically designed to provide a suitable flat surface to support one or more RACK, ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT. It may include legs and/or leveling devices. For similar items designed primarily for the purpose of damping shock and/or vibration, see MOUNTING BASE, ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT. See also STAND, (as modified).

PROTECTOR,SPLICE,ELECTRICAL CABLE

An item specifically designed to be mechanically fastened to an electrical cable on each end of a splice to protect the splice from excessive strain. It usually has provisions for making a waterproof or moisture-proof joint. Excludes INSULATION SLEEVING, ELECTRICAL.

NUT,COUPLING,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

An item of metallic composition with internal threads and an internal seat designed to join a ferrule capped conduit to a fitting. See also BONDNUT, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT.

STRAP,INSULATOR BRACKET

An item specifically designed to reinforce insulator brackets at their fastenings on a line construction pole when high strength wire or long spans are used.

COVER,JUNCTION BOX

A cover containing facilities for mounting directly on a JUNCTION BOX. It may have provisions for the insertion and/or mounting of electrical devices, such as switches, connectors, additional covers, and jewels. It may include the jewel(s). HANGER,WIRE STRAND

A metallic item, grooved to fit a wire strand such as a messenger strand, and designed to be attached to a utility pole or other supporting surface for the purpose of horizontally suspending and firmly securing the wire strand. CROSS,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

A type of electrical conduit fitting fabricated in the form of a cross having four hubs in the same plane, the axes of which form a right angle, and primarily intended to join electrical conduits and/or conduit fittings. TEE,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

A type of electrical conduit fitting fabricated in the form of the letter T having three hubs for joining electrical conduits and/or conduit fittings. For items of this type having facilities for mounting wiring devices, see CONDUIT OUTLET.

A panel designed to fill a space not occupied by actual operating components, and may have instructions, component designations, or component identifications etched or printed thereon.

A threaded or unthreaded device, with an unthreaded center hole to accommodate an electrical cable or tube, designed to mate with the threads or sealing components of a stuffing tube body for the purpose of compressing packing around the electrical cable or tube. A component of a STUFFING TUBE.

STRAP,SAFETY,WIRE STRAND HANGER

An item primarily designed to be attached to a cable suspension clamp mounting bolt, providing a guard or loop below the mounting bolt to support the cable should the messenger fail.

STRAP,SUPPORT,WIRE STRAND HANGER

An item primarily designed to provide additional support to the end of the clamp mounting bolt by transmitting a portion of the stresses to the pole or supporting member.

STRAP,SUPPORT AND SAFETY,WIRE STRAND HANGER

An item primarily designed to provide additional support to the end of a cable suspension clamp bolt by providing a linkage from the bolt end to the supporting member and is also extended below the suspension bolt to form a loop or guard to support the cable should a messenger fail.

An item consisting of two or more clamp type devices with facilities for the connection of jumpers and/or grounding cables. When installed this item provides for the temporary grounding of de-energized electrical transmission line(s) to protect workmen against injury resulting from accidental re-energization of the lines. SLEEVE,MARKER,CABLE

A cylindrical item into which a wire or cable is inserted. It is inscribed for identification, to indicate connections or routing of electrical cables and the like. For unmarked items made of insulation material, see INSULATION SLEEVING, ELECTRICAL. For items secured by crimping, slot and tongue, or other similar methods of fastening, see BAND, MARKER.

CASE,STANDARDIZED COMPONENTS,ELECTRICAL

A case which by virtue of standardization of equipment dimensions is designed to contain one or more components of different basic names. Do not use for cases designed only for specific items or a specific grouping of items.

FERRULE-NUT COUPLING,ELECTRICAL CONDUIT

An item consisting of a FERRULE, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT upon which is permanently mounted a NUT, COUPLING, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT. It is designed to be attached to an electrical conduit and used to mechanically connect the conduit to another conduit fitting such as a box connector.
